Donny Bradfield, also known as Shabez Jamal, is an interdisciplinary artist and educator currently serving as the Harnish Visiting Artist and Lecturer in Photography at Smith College. Jamal holds an MFA from Tulane University in Louisiana. Their visual practice and research focus on the temporal nature of photographic imagery and memory, especially in relation to Blackness and the impact of race on the development of physical, political, and socio-economic spaces.

 

Jamal works with various mediums, including photography, installation, sound, sculpture, and video. They have received several fellowships and awards, such as Harvard University’s In the City Fellowship, the Mellon Community Engaged Fellowship, and Washington University’s The Divided City Research Grant. Their work has been featured in numerous national and international institutions, including the St. Louis Art Museum, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
